No matter who you are or how much you enjoy a good sweat session, I think we can all relate to the guilty feeling of knowing you “should” exercise, but completely lacking the motivation to get moving. Here are 3 tips I rely on to keep myself in a good routine, even when I don’t feel like working out.

- Get up and make your bed.
- Yep, you read that right. And maybe it’s not making your bed, but finding another small win like putting on your sports bra or finding your sneakers. The bottom line is that it can feel overwhelming to get up, change clothes, find your shoes, pull out the weights/drive to the gym, find the workout routine, and start exercising. Often giving myself one small win of getting off the couch and making my bed will lead to the next small win of changing clothes (since I’m in my bedroom anyway), which eventually leads to exercising.
- Just start and shoot for 10 minutes.
- Same principle, just applied to the workout itself. Maybe a 40-min endeavor feels overwhelming. Commit to just 10 minutes of moving and you may just find that after 10 minutes you’d like to keep going. And if 10 minutes is all you get in for today, then awesome! 10 minutes is far better than no minutes. The more you do this, the more motivation you’ll find for more movement over time.
- Mindset reminders.
- Creating a healthy mindset has helped me tremendously. I have to remind myself of truths like this one: the best motivation tool is not to rely on motivation. Action breeds motivation. Often people get that backwards and think they need to find motivation to bring about action. No one, and I really mean NO ONE, is motivated all the time. Develop a mindset to take action even when you don’t feel like it and the motivation will follow.
