There are 4 years and a whole lot of change between those 2 photos above. There’s also a lot of failed attempts at losing weight and sticking to healthy habits.
I would often decide, “This is it. No sugar for 30 days.” Or, “insert diet type here for the month of July,” convinced this would certainly jump start my journey and get me leaps and bounds toward where I wanted to be after 30 days of sticking to it. Relatable??
This was my version of yo-yo dieting for years.
Fast forward to the year before the photo on the left. I finally started a journey of implementing overall systems and habits that were actually maintainable!

I believe the reason I failed for so long, as do many others, is the all-or-nothing mentality. Focusing on radical change for a short window is not sustainable and leads to frustration.
How to approach it differently:
- Start with your mindset:
- Journal
- Ask hard questions: When do I find myself eating an excess of fatty/sugary foods? Am I eating my emotions? How can I feel my emotions instead of eating them? Why do I struggle with healthy movement? Am I trying to make this look like someone else’s journey rather than my own?
- Habits:
- Start small, like really small. If you start with something you know you can accomplish on your hardest day, you’ll set yourself up for winning! For example, don’t commit to running a mile everyday if you’re not already in the habit of running. Instead, commit to daily walking to the end of your driveway and back. Once that’s a strong habit, go a little further. Keep winning!
- You’ll inevitably miss a day. Life happens. Best advice: don’t miss twice.
- Routines:
- Set yourself up for routines that will help you win!
- Don’t buy unhealthy food you binge. Fill your fridge and pantry with healthier options that YOU LIKE.
- Set out your walking shoes/workout clothes next to your bed at night so that you can easily put them on and walk out the door for your driveway walk the next morning.
Start small. Start with mentality, habits, and routines. These systems help you create a sustainable journey finally leading you toward your goals rather than away from them!
